Job Opening: Police Officer
- The Brandon Police Department is currently recruiting and accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. The ideal candidate shall be Level III certified in the State of Vermont (lateral transfer), or for out-of-state candidates, have a comparable certification in their respective state to obtain an academy waiver in Vermont. Qualified candidates with an Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s degree, or Master’s Degree in criminal justice or related field from an accredited college/university will be given preference. Candidates who also hold certification as instructors or who have specialized training (FTO, Firearms Instructor, Death Investigator, UOF Instructor, etc.…) will also be given preference in the selection process.
The Brandon Police Department has many opportunities for specialty assignments, such as motorcycle/motor patrol officer, drone pilot, traffic/H.E.A.T. enforcement, Use of Force Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Taser Instructor, and Death Investigator, as well as numerous opportunities for additional training in various law enforcement disciplines. Officers who are hired and have worked for the Brandon Police Department, and are in good standing, receive an automatic promotion to Patrol Officer First Class after two years of service. We also have promotional opportunities within the agency to the rank of Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant for those who strive for and wish to one day rise to a leadership position within our agency. Requirements for this position are possession of a valid motor vehicle license and certification as a full-time officer by the Vermont Criminal Justice Council and/or or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire. When fully staffed, the Brandon Police Department has 7 full-time officers, 2 level II part-time officers, and an administrative assistant.
The Town of Brandon offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision plans in addition to retirement through VMERS D. This position is a union position with a starting salary of $70,720 ($34.00 per-hour starting salary) with additional hourly pay for night differential and on-call pay. All uniforms, firearms, and equipment are supplied to our officers. Officers already certified as law enforcement officers in Vermont and/or with out-of-state certification can come in at a higher pay step commensurate with credit for your previous years of service. Full-time certified officers from Vermont may be eligible for an abbreviated hiring/selection process. Out-of-state full-time certified officers must complete the full hiring process.
